The 1,000 Best Girl Baby Names in the UK
The results are in, the most recent list of England and Wales’ best beloved girls’ names tells us a lot. For starters, classics are still having a major moment and do not seem to be going anywhere, any time soon. Like sweet Charlotte which has held a top spot since being given royal status in 2015, and lots of similarly inclined favourites with Victorian appeal like Emma, Elizabeth, and Florence who rank high right alongside her.
Another trend worth noting is botanical names including flowery picks like Daisy, Lily, and Jasmine, plus green or tree names like Willow and Ivy which are highly favored. Just outside the top set are more whimsical nature names like Olive and River, and color names like Scarlett and Amber are also quite popular. Creative names like Neveah and Imogen are biggies, and whimsical place names like Sienna and Savannah also reign supreme.
UK parents are loving lots of traditional British names like Poppy, Bonnie, and Eleanor still, but are finding inspiration from around the globe in the top 1,000 as well– like from the French (Isabelle, Amelie); from Italy (Luna, Sienna, Arabella); and even getting some American influence, a la Maddison and Paisley. In that vein, there are many similarities across this list and top girls names in the US, most notably in the top 25 among the Olivias, Emmas, and Sophias. And one thing is for sure after reading up and down this list: if you love little girl names with a central “v,” “l,” or “m” sound, you are not alone.
Today almost anything goes in baby names, from the absolute most pristine classics to a bit more whimsy and fun. Whatever inspires your little princess’s moniker, from names rounded up across the globe or in your favourite fairy tale to a nature name or Granny’s influence, rest assured you will find the best baby girl names on this list.
Top 10 Best Girl Names in the UK
- Olivia: An international superstar finding herself in the top spot for US baby girls as well, this ancient Latin name meaning “olive tree” has a soft, inviting sound.
- Amelia: The classic stunner translates to “work” of German roots.
- Isla: With mixed origins from the Spanish (“island”) and Scottish (as a place name), this effervescent two-syllable girls’ name has catapulted out of near obscurity in the past several years to its proud position at the top of the UK charts.
-
Ava: This name has global appeal and multiple meanings with its Hebrew, German, and Latin roots—“life,” “water” or “island,” and “bird.”
- Mia: The simple Italian moniker meaning “mine” is also a classic shortening of Mary or Maria.
- Ivy: Nature names are a favourite among parents in England and Wales; this green, leafy plant has enough appeal to jump into the top 10 from resting just outside in recent years.
- Lily: Another beautiful baby girl name from nature, the white flower conjures up a pretty picture and sounds lovely rolling off the tongue.
- Isabella: While shorter, more classic names are outweighing those with princess-y appeal, this four-syllable sweetness meaning “pledged to God” of Spanish/Italian origin remains very relevant.
- Rosie: A bit more contemporary than Rose itself, the softened take on a floral favourite is quite popular with UK parents.
- Sophia: She might have dropped a couple spots, but the Greek name meaning “wisdom” is still much beloved.
Best Girl Names in the UK 11-25
-
Grace: Soft and hopeful word names serve as a comfort to people everywhere when times have been uncertain. It is no surprise that Grace is holding on strong in the top 20.
- Freya: Even just ten years ago, you would be hard-pressed to find a Freya in a crowd, but the Norse mythology name translating to “a noble woman” is absolutely on fire at the moment.
- Willow: Soft, romantic, and lovely, the weepy tree name has risen a few ranks in the UK recently, solidifying her relevance among modern parents.
- Florence: At a time when vintage names are feeling fresh again, it is no surprise to see this darling moniker dancing toward the top of the charts. Florence is a gender-neutral name, though much more popular for girls; it means “flourishing” or “prosperous” of mixed Latin/English roots.
- Emily: It is one of those names that history refuses to let go of, holding out at the top of the charts on and off for decades. Emily means “fire” and has a sweet and enchanting sound, offering up popular nicknames like Emma and Emmie.
- Ella: Soft and effortlessly feminine, the name stems from English and German roots meaning “fairy maiden” or “completely,” depending which linguistic lines you trace.
- Poppy: With the rise of playful names and the solid floral trend, it’s no wonder the bright and cheerful poppy flower has held onto so many adoring fans in the UK.
- Evie: Just a few spots up from her full version, the breathy nickname for Evelyn has earned clout all on her own.
- Elsie: Frozen fans or anyone who likes something a bit different might like this slant alternative to Elsa, which is also a diminutive of Elspeth, an Elizabeth variation meaning “pledged to God.”
- Charlotte: It might be a handful-plus of years since the tiny real-life princess was given this precious moniker, but her name holds global popularity and a spot just inside the top 20 here in the UK. From the French, Charlotte is the feminised Charles meaning “free man.”
- Evelyn: If you love Evie but want her to have a longer formal name, you are not alone. The classic, romantic English name meaning “water” or “desired” is almost as popular as its shortened version.
- Sienna: An endlessly appealing Italian place name, it also belongs to an earthy colour, making this exotic-sounding girl name a hit for UK parents.
- Sofia: The Spanish/Italian spelling of Sophia renders this classic girl name doubly popular with two separate spots in the UK Top 25 names for girls!
- Daisy: Another peppy floral name for the UK favourites—this classic spring flower blooms in a slew of hues and makes a precious pick for your little girl.
- Phoebe: The gorgeous Greek name does not just sound effervescent and bright; it actually translates to “shining” or “radiant one.”
